Why Fresh Vitamin C Matters: What Happens When It Oxidizes

Vitamin C is one of the most loved skincare ingredients because when it’s fresh, it supports brightness, antioxidant protection, and an overall healthier-looking complexion. But there’s one thing most people don’t realize:
👉 Vitamin C doesn’t stay powerful forever. Once it’s mixed into a serum, it slowly begins to oxidize. As it oxidizes, its strength fades.
Oxidation Happens Faster Than You Think
L-ascorbic acid (the most common form of Vitamin C in skincare) is highly unstable. Exposure to light, air, heat, and time causes it to break down.
In many formulas, oxidation can begin within 2–4 weeks after opening (sometimes sooner depending on storage and packaging.)
As it oxidizes:
the color shifts from clear → pale yellow → amber → brown
the antioxidant power drops
the formula becomes less effective, even if it still looks fine on the shelf
And here’s the tricky part…
Some store-bought serums are formulated with stabilizers, coloring offsets, and heavy preservatives so they appear fresh longer even when the Vitamin C inside isn’t doing much anymore. The product may look stable, but the potency may not be.
Think About a Product’s Journey Before It Reaches You
Most commercial Vitamin C serums don’t go straight from the lab to your bathroom. They may spend time:
sitting in a warehouse
being shipped in hot trucks or cold storage
stored under bright retail lighting or sunlight
sitting on a shelf for months before anyone buys it
Temperature swings and light exposure accelerate oxidation long before you ever open the bottle. By the time you bring it home, the serum may already be partway through its lifespan.
When Vitamin C is fresh, it’s powerful.
That’s why many formulators and DIY skincare makers prefer to create Vitamin C in small batches and use it within a short window (typically around two weeks.) When you make it yourself, you use it at its peak instead of guessing how long a bottle sat in transit or on a shelf and you control storage conditions. You know exactly when it was mixed and you’re actually getting the potency you expect. Plus, you’re not relying on mystery stabilizers to mask the ugly oxidation.
Making Sure it’s Powerful
Vitamin C is amazing when it’s fresh, active, and handled with care. But time, heat, light, and transport can weaken it long before the bottle runs out (even if it still looks fine!)
If you want real results, don’t just use Vitamin C - use Vitamin C that still has power.
And yes, you can absolutely make it yourself! When you control the process, you control the freshness.
